Set sail on your career with our summer placement
Summer placements last for two weeks at either our Glasgow or Edinburgh office and
will take place in June of each year. There is a timetable of activities and events
to provide an introduction to the Firm, the delivery of legal services and the Firm’s
systems and procedures – not just the legal side or indeed the photocopier! It will
also give you an opportunity to demonstrate your potential to contribute to the
Firm.
A fortnight may seem short but the structure of the placement should mean that it
is a challenging and rewarding experience and there will also be some fun!
The placement will be remunerated.
What previous summer applicant students have said
“McClure Naismith exceeded my expectations. The work assigned to me on my placement
provided me with opportunities to not only improve my existing legal skills but
to show what I can already do. A sense of pressure was provided in terms of meeting
deadlines for the case study and debate tasks which added an extra sense of realism
to the experience. Realism was further enforced by the hours worked – I wasn’t typically
doing a 9-5 day, I occasionally had to stay on later or work through my lunch to
get tasks done. I felt more immersed in the office because of it. It was a challenging
experience – which I feel is one of its greatest assets.”
“I was taken aback at how friendly everyone was. Generally, there is a perception
that there is a barrier in law firms between partners and associates with the rest
of the staff. I never found this at McClures. I found everyone that I met to be
very approachable and easygoing.”
“I loved having the chance to interact with everyone – partners, trainees, solicitors,
facilities staff and even with clients on the final morning. It’s only by speaking
to people who have a different range of roles within the firm that you can gauge
its true ethos and the opportunity to do this is probably what sets McClure’s summer
placement apart from other large city centre firms.”
“The placement scheme thoroughly exceeded all expectations. I’ve heard too many
tales of afternoons spent by the photocopier or essentially being a messenger-person.
The hard-work put into the structure and organisation of the scheme certainly pays
off and ranks it well above other placements.”
How to Apply for a Summer Placement
As our summer placements programme for 2010 is now full, details of the recruitment
process for summer placements in 2011 will be available on our website later this
year.
Our commitment to you and your commitment to us
The summer placement scheme forms an integral part of our recruitment process for
trainees and is only available to those students who are actively seeking a training
contract.
Should we offer you a summer placement we are making a commitment to you to provide
you with that placement. You are also making a commitment to us to undertake the
placement. It is unacceptable and unfair to other students to pull out of the placement
after accepting it. You should therefore apply only if you are certain that you
wish to undertake a placement with us.
Further, any candidate who takes part in on our summer placement scheme in the knowledge
that they have accepted a training contract with another firm should be aware that
they are depriving a fellow student of an opportunity to potentially secure a training
contract.
